Breathing

I struggled to fall asleep last night,
and I wondered if you could feel it, too.

The air was viscous
like your mother’s homemade jam
and it wouldn’t slide down my throat,
it just welled there instead.

I wondered if you could feel that catch
in the back of your throat;
the same as it did in

Mine.

Is it the same when you breathe—
do you feel the oxygen pour
from your lungs to mine
as if we were tethered
by our throats?

And maybe it gets just a little easier
when we’re together.
