yes, it was almost all of the candy

scattered, sparkly display, strewn 

across the kitchen table where 

we ate our last meal together—

portillo's—before dad left, and

it's unclear to me if i would've preferred

the gummy hotdogs to the real thing,

but the table looked bejeweled nonetheless,

wet and sweet as teeth, and

if i could only sort through the mix, pass

the peanut butter cups to my sister,

catching her rye smile as she took in

all i did not ask for,

maybe i could figure out where the cavity was.
