your mother tells you it's time
to start learning the names of
your distant family members,
thirds cousins, twice removed
and which of them are pregnant,
another name to learn, your mother
says that if you can name a tree
by its leaves in fall then you will
never have to worry about getting lost
on your way home, she'll never have
to worry about how your life will turn
out because you understand
that a road is a grid and you know who
your family is in every town
and how to ask for directions and how
the baby is doing and you can't
deny that it is nice to know how
the baby is doing, even if what
it is doing is crying because of
all it does not yet understand
